Making data count for cancer survivors

At the Netherlands Cancer Institute – Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital (NKI-AVL), we conduct groundbreaking research to treat cancer and improve patient’s lives long after their treatment. The Watt Group at the NKI-AVL is focused on discovering the genetic, clinical, and environmental factors that influence the long-term outcomes after cancer treatment, especially heart disease and subsequent cancers. The research group collaborates with a network of accomplished scientists from around the world. In addition to research, we implement evidence-based improvements to care through the nationwide BETER care program for cancer survivors (link: https://www.beternahodgkin.nl/). This role offers the opportunity to work with multidisciplinary teams, support cutting-edge research and data-driven operations, and help build a user-friendly and sustainable data ecosystem within our group. As a member of this group, your scientific and personal development will be supported, for example via attendance to workshops, seminars, and conferences.

Key responsibilities

We are seeking a motivated data manager who is interested in contributing to our mission of improving the lives of people with (a history of) cancer. Your role will include collection and management of research data, statistical analysis, and collaboration with international research consortia. You will have the opportunity to design and implement appropriate database architecture for different studies, including longitudinal data, genetics, and biomedical imaging. Your technical expertise will be applied and recognized throughout the research life cycle, from study conception through data collection and ultimately publication of findings in international journals. Some specific responsibilities are given below:

Data Governance & Stewardship

  • Oversee data lifecycle management, including acquisition, storage, curation, access, and archiving.

  • Maintain and improve data documentation, metadata standards, and data dictionaries.

  • Ensure alignment with GDPR and other relevant regulatory frameworks.

  • Implement quality control procedures to maintain data accuracy and consistency.

  • Coordinate data validation, cleaning, and harmonisation processes.

Technical Operations

  • Manage databases (e.g., SQL, MS Access, PowerBI, MS Azure cloud-based systems).

  • Develop and maintain data pipelines, scripts, and documentation used in data processing and analysis.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Serve as the bridge between data producers, scientists, and other stakeholders.

  • Train scientists and support staff in data-related procedures and best practices.

  • Take ownership of existing SOPs, data inventories, and project documentation.

Jouw profiel

We are seeking a detail-oriented and independent research data manager with the following qualifications:

Essential

  • Technical proficiency with databases and data wrangling tools (e.g. SQL, R, Python, PowerBI).

  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate across diverse teams.

Desirable

  • Experience in data management, preferably in research or healthcare settings.

  • Familiarity with GDPR, informed consent management, and ethical data sharing.

  • Knowledge of FAIR principles and metadata standards.

  • Proficiency in the Dutch language.

  • Background in life sciences, social sciences, or public health.

Your development opportunities and employment conditions

The basis for your employment conditions is in accordance with the CLA Hospitals. You will receive from us:

  • A two year's contract for 36 hours per week, with extension contingent on a positive review;

  • A gross monthly salary between € 3.329,- and € 4.723,-, based on a 36-hour working week, in line with FWG 50 and depending on your experience;

  • 144 holiday hours and 57 hours of Personal Life Budget, with full-time employment;

  • Annual holiday pay of 8.33% and a fixed end-of-year bonus of 8.33%;

  • A travel allowance of €0.23 per km;

  • Free parking at the Netherlands Cancer Institute. And with our bicycle plan and discount on public transport we also make it attractive for you to leave the car at home;
